SummaryThe incumbent is responsible for performing the full range of environmental sanitation duties in critical care areas utilizing a variety of cleaning techniques, supplies, and equipment. Primary duties consist of cleaning and disinfecting floors, walls, ceilings, and beds in critical care areas, using very stringent cleaning techniques conforming to the increased sanitation and infection control requirements in critical care areas.ResponsibilitiesUses a wide variety of chemical solutions and floor care products, all of which must be handled in accordance with their accompanying materiel safety data sheet insuring that chemical materials are always kept secure. Must be capable of operating power equipment such as; automatic scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines, industrial vacuums, etc. Incumbent collects, transports, and properly disposes of various types of general and medical waste materiel. Must be flexible and able to effectively cope with constantly changing priorities and the varying activity levels of a critical care area. All daily and periodic tasks such as; bed cleaning, damp mopping, and disposal of sharps and other infectious waste must be accomplished efficiently as time and circumstances allow and in concert with clinical services. Performs specific cleaning tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures. Incumbent performs periodic tasks as per a predetermined schedule. These tasks may include, but are not limited to, changing curtains, cleaning equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, gurneys etc., as well as Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) such as IV Poles, vital sign monitors etc. Perform operator maintenance and ensure security of equipment placed in their care. This task may include; cleaning of equipment, replacement of filters, brushes and recharging of batteries, etc. May be assigned to work in a group to accomplish major cleaning projects, furniture moves, etc. Additionally, incumbent may be required to remove. soiled linen from patient areas, distribute clean linen, and stock linen closets. may participate in VA Gulf Coast Health Care System annual linen inventory and report. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor. The Housekeeping Aid position is restricted to Veterans preference eligibles only (5 U.S.C. 3310; 5 CFR Part 330, Subpart D) by law (Title 5 USC, Section 2108). EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Ability to understand and be able to implement the special sanitation techniques and practices that are required in a medical care environment. Must understand and be able to implement the additional sanitation techniques and practices that must be employed while in a critical care setting. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions to be able to communicate effectively with their supervisors and medical personnel assigned to their area. Must command sufficient computer knowledge to complete annual online training requirements and other administrative task such as requesting leave etc. Due to the fragile condition of the patients and the potentially infectious nature of their illness, individual must be constantly attentive to infection control guidelines. Must have the ability to follow set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follow an established sequence of work. Possess the ability to perform floor maintenance, wall washing, cleaning doors, door frames, baseboard corners and edges, and stairwells, bed cleaning, restroom cleaning, office cleaning, etc. Ability to accomplish tasks by sweeping, dust mopping, damp and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming and extracting carpets and runners, spot cleaning areas, and high and low dusting. Must have the ability to perform moderate lifting, up to 50 pounds. Additional physical demands include almost constant standing, bending, stooping, walking, pushing and reaching. Must have the ability to extend arms and reach above shoulder height. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire-The ability to to do the work of Housekeeping Aid without more than normal supervision. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:Dexterity and SafetyInterpret Instructions, Specifications (other than blueprint reading)Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentWithout more than normal supervisionWork Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: During the course of their duties, incumbent is required to perform moderate lifting, up to 50pounds. Additional physical demands include almost constant standing, bending, stooping, walking, pushing and reaching. Also, the incumbent must have the ability to extend arms and reach above shoulder height. Incumbent may be required to climb ladders to perform duties, such as dusting, cleaning walls or changing cubicle curtains. Incumbent's vision must be sufficient for them to safely and satisfactorily carry out all assigned duties.EducationAdditional InformationReceiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
