Job Duties:

Donor Center MLT Job Duties, including but not limited to:

Preform donor registration in LIS
Understand all immunohemtologic procedures required for appropriate donor ABO/Rh
Process donor units for transport
Ensure weekly blood component quota
Medical/Hospital MLT Job Duties, including but not limited to:
Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of the following sections of the laboratory: hematology, chemistry, cytology, histotechnology, urinalysis, serology, microbiology and blood bank as outlined
Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis. Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained.
Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identify the cause of common problems and make simple repairs.
Recognize and react to indicators of malfunction. Locate and implement corrections. Obtain analytical data, convert to a prescribed unit of reporting, as necessary, and correlate data to verify results.
Conduct quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintain proper records for quality control and quality assurance reports.
Prepare specimens for transport to the facility laboratory or for mail out.
Prepare biological waste for proper disposal.
Genetics Lab MLT JOb Duties, including but not limited to:
Performs clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of areas as described in following sections of the laboratory: Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Cytogenetics.
Performs a wide variety of laboratory tests either manually or using automated instrumentation.
Evaluates quality control information against measurable criteria in the performance of laboratory tests.
Performs precise and accurate laboratory testing according to established laboratory procedures.
Receives written or electronic requisitions from health care providers for routine and special laboratory tests.
Sets up and adjusts laboratory equipment and apparatus.
Adds reagents or indicator solutions, and subjects specimens to various laboratory operations according to established procedures.
Prepares slides for microscopic analysis as necessary.
Observes test reactions, changes of color, or formation of precipitates; studies or subjects treated specimens to automatic analyzing equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Records test results to flat logs and request slips and file reports in the electronic health record.
Brings to the attention of the section supervisor, pathologist or general laboratory supervisor any unusual or grossly abnormal test result.
Performs light general cleaning of work areas such as collection of trash, autoclaving of specimens, cleaning of bench tops and light dusting.
Prepares specimens for transport to MTF laboratory or for other civilian/DOD reference laboratories.
Prepares biological waste for proper disposal.
Participates/performs the prescribed QC and CAP proficiency testing (PT) programs.
Performs and documents required equipment maintenance as required.
Adheres to infection control procedures including the use of personal protective equipment and proper disposal of waste
Participates in required equipment, in-service training and continuing medical education. Complete required hospital training.
Ensures safe work environment and employ safe work habits.
Genetics Lab MT Job Duties, including but not limited to:
Performs clinical laboratory testing for nucleic acid-based diseases for DoD beneficiaries and on survey samples submitted to the laboratory for quality assurance and proficiency testing.
Routinely performs testing on blood, cells, cell cultures, and various tissue samples from patients, deceased individuals, and fetuses (prenatal testing).
Must maintain sample tracking and integrity meticulously to prevent cross contamination of samples. Nucleic acid testing is subject to a multitude of constantly changing variables, which can affect the results.
Demonstrates high-level laboratory problem solving skills and analytical abilities to successfully perform assigned laboratory testing.
Receives packages containing samples, and verifies the presence of the correct contents and paperwork, the adequacy of the sample, and the documentation.
Creates labels and folders for the test to be performed. Records the samples on the correct worksheets in the laboratory, in computer information management systems, and on Excel spreadsheets.
Extracts nucleic acid from samples utilizing multiple established protocols. Assesses the adequacy of the nucleic acid obtained, quantifies final nucleic acid samples, and documents results of nucleic acid extraction processes. Performs calculations to determine appropriate dilutions of nucleic acid and/or quantities to be used for various testing procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Completion of the following:

Donor Center MLT:
Graduate from an accredited MLT training program
Genetics and Medical/Hospital MLT:
Graduate from a medical laboratory technician training program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
Genetics MT:
Bachelor degree of above from a medical technology or related science program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
Experience: Candidates must have the following experience:

Donor Center MLT:
Minimum (3) years of experience in an accredited lab. Certified MLT with less than (3) years will be consider if there is prior military service/experience
Genetics MLT:
One year of experience working as Medical Laboratory Technician with experience in genetics (molecular, PCR, Nucleic Acids)
Genetics MT:
Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Medical Technologist with experience in genetics (molecular, PCR, Nucleic Acids)
Medical/Hospital Medical Laboratory Technician:
Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician
Security:
National Background Investigation
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Must have reliable transportation to and from work site
License/Certification and Training:

Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) American Heart Association
Certification in respective discipline (MLT or MT) by ASCP, AMT, or NCA (NCA accepted in Donor Center only)
Schedule:

Monday-Friday, Day Shift only (specific days/hours depend on lab/shift assigned, standard hours between 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM). Genetics lab requires work on Saturdays and hours of operation are 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
Donor Center: Required travel for blood drives (day trips and occasional overnights, compensated and covered)
Excludes Federal Holidays
