POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Supervisor, provide maintenance, repair and replacement of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment on Keesler AFB. MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES: -- Install, service and repairs environmental-control systems where required by contract utilizing knowledge of heating / refrigeration theory, pipefitting and structural layout. -- Mount compressors and condenser units on platform or floor using hand tools following blueprints or engineering specifications. -- Installs evaporator unit in chassis or in an air duct system using hand tools. -- Cut and bend tubing to correct length and shape using cutting and bending equipment and tools. -- Join tubing or pipes to various heating and refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions and solder joints to form complete circuits for heating and refrigerant mediums. -- Install expansion and discharge valves. -- Connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating ventilation fans to control panels, and connect control panels to power source. -- Install air and water filters. -- Inject small amount of refrigerant into compressors to test system and add Freon gas to ensure prescribed operating pressure. -- Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to insure proper operation. -- Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units using electrician's hand tools and test equipment. -- Load and unload service truck with or without helpers and keep the truck in good working condition. MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED: -- Various hand tools, schematics, test and diagnostic equipment. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: -- Work requires prolonged standing, climbing, bending, and occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions. Frequently lifts unaided equipment weighing up to 25 pounds with occasional assists in lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 75 pounds. Dirt, dust, grease and oils are always present. There can be exposure to chemicals that may burn and irritate the skin and eyes if proper personal protective equipment is not worn. Failure to follow appropriate safety procedures, there could result in cuts, bruises, shocks, and strains. Must comply with OSHA, EPA, US Air Force regulations and company work rules. Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays when required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required. -- High School graduate or GED. Experience: -- Two years Heating, Refrigeration Skills and possess an EPA Universal Certification. -- Air Conditioning Mechanic job experience preferred SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES Does this position supervise others?
